Abstract

The Go Barrier Free project was a study of Canadian Federal Accessibility Standards in three focus areas: the built environment, information and communication technologies, and transportation.

The New Brunswick Community College – Information and Communication Technology Research Group conducted the project from 2023 to 2026, with the support of an advisory committee of experts from outside the college.

The Advancing Accessibility Standards Research Program of Accessibility Standards Canada provided funding for Go Barrier Free. Accessibility Standards Canada is a federal department created through the Accessible Canada Act to foster the development of standards for “federally-regulated entities and federal organizations” [1].

The Go Barrier Free project had the following objectives:

  • Identify gaps in accessibility standards.
  • Recommend updates to accessibility standards that will remove barriers.
  • Identify organizational and technical approaches to enhancing accessibility that can inform the development of improved accessibility standards.
